Katz connected Kerry's comments to Holocaust Memorial Day. "Holocaust Day ceremonies. [We hear] terrible descriptions [of] how the Nazis and their collaborators, drenched in hate and race theory, turned millions of defenseless Jews into dust and ashes - and the world stood by in silence," Katz wrote, in a Facebook post. "And now the Secretary of State describes Israel as an 'apartheid state,'" Katz lamented. "Us? The Jewish state, [which was] established to protect itself after [it was] intimidated with threats of extermination?""Kerry, shame on you!" he concluded. "There are thing you just can't say." Reports surfaced early Monday that Kerry had made a number of inflammatory comments during a closed-door meeting Friday, including the 'apartheid' remark and predictions of renewed Palestinian Arab violence against Israelis. He also suggested that a change in either the Israeli or Palestinian leadership could make achieving a peace deal more feasible, and lashed out against Israeli construction in Judea and Samaria.Kerry also said, according to The Daily Beast, that both Israeli and Palestinian Authority (PA) leaders share the blame for the current impasse in the talks. Kerry also said that at some point, he might unveil his own peace deal and tell both sides to "take it or leave it." "A two-state solution will be clearly underscored as the only real alternative. Because a unitary state winds up either being an apartheid state with second class citizens - or it ends up being a state that destroys the capacity of Israel to be a Jewish state," Kerry was quoted as having told the group of senior officials and experts from the U.S., Western Europe, Russia, and Japan.
"Once you put that frame in your mind, that reality, which is the bottom line, you understand how imperative it is to get to the two state solution, which both leaders, even yesterday, said they remain deeply committed to," he claimed.

Arabs of Judea and Samaria, he pointed out, vote in elections for the Palestinian Authority which administers all of their civil affairs. Furthermore, every day, many Palestinian Arabs are admitted to Israel's hospitals and are treated in the same rooms and facilities as Jewish and Arab Israel citizens. In addition, they are able to move freely between Palestinian Authority-controlled areas. Blacks in South Africa had none of these privileges, he noted.

According to Fox News, the number two House leader said that Kerry should apologize for the comments, while another senator called on the top diplomat to resign. "Reports that Secretary Kerry has suggested Israel is becoming an apartheid state are extremely disappointing," House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who is Jewish, said in a statement quoted by the network. "The use of the word apartheid has routinely been dismissed as both offensive and inaccurate, and Secretary Kerry's use of it makes peace even harder to achieve," added Cantor, who urged Kerry to "apologize to the Israeli government and people." Hours after Cantor's call for an apology, Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz called for Kerry's resignation on the Senate floor. "Mr. President, it is my belief that Secretary Kerry has thus proven himself unsuitable for his position and that before any further harm is done to our alliance with Israel, he should offer President Obama his resignation." Cruz said. "And the president should accept it." The Daily Beast website first reported about Kerry's comments on Sunday. The remarks were made during a closed-door meeting, and the website received a recording of them.
The comments came one day after Israel suspended the peace talks with the Palestinian Authority, a response it its unity deal with longtime rival Hamas.
Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, also slammed Kerry over the reported remarks, made ahead of Holocaust Remembrance Day. "These comments are outrageous and disappointing," he said in a statement quoted by Fox News. "Incendiary name calling does not change the fundamental fact that Israel does not currently have a viable partner for peace. I urge Secretary Kerry and the administration to focus on pressing challenges in the Middle East such as ending the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria and preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon instead of pressuring Israel to make additional concessions to partners who have now chosen to align themselves with a terrorist group," he added. Pensando alla Siria, di questi nostri tempi, vengono alla mente immagini sfuocate di un luogo mangiato dalle bombe e dalle rivoluzioni confuse, dalle mani lunghe di chi in quelle mani insozzate del sangue della guerra stringe i soldi e le armi per continuarla senza sosta e senza fine, quella guerra. Immagini al ralenty, dai colori accesi di uno schermo televisivo o dai colori spenti di un video su youtube.
Pensando alla Siria, prima che la violenza la dilaniasse, ci si immaginava sabbie incandescenti e sole accecante, minareti splendenti e cammelli annoiati, occhi di donna profondi e profumi di cibi antichi e pungenti. Immagini bidimensionali, come spuntassero dalle pagine patinate di una rivista di viaggi e turismo. Nel mezzo, tra la Siria che c'era e quella che c'è, si dipana la vita di chi abita i luoghi e i tempi. A raccontarci una di queste possibili vite, ci sono le parole del romanzo autobiografico di Amani El Nasif, Siria mon amour, scritto assieme a Cristina Obber, giornalista e saggista, edito Piemme.
Amani è nata nel 1990 e, dall'età di tre anni, ha vissuto in Italia, a Bassano del Grappa, assieme alla sua famiglia. La sua vita, fino a raggiungere i sedici anni, è stata la vita di una ragazza divisa tra le rigide regole familiari a cui era sottoposta e il desiderio di una vita libera da costrizioni sentite come lontane e straniere.
Amani ha un fidanzato, Andrea, amiche e amici di scuola, cellulare e un lavoretto che le permette di non essere dipendente dalla famiglia. La sua vita cambia quando il suo datore di lavoro le propone di firmare un contratto a tempo indeterminato, aprendole la porta a una vita nuova e completamente indipendente, carica di gioia e aspettative. Scopre, però, di non poter firmare alcun contratto dal momento che sui suoi documenti il suo cognome è registrato in maniera errata. Eccoci giunti così al punto di svolta. Amani è costretta a un breve ritorno in Siria, accompagnata dalla madre, per modificare i documenti e tornare poi alla sua vita consueta. Il viaggio si rivelerà un astuto inganno tessuto dalla madre e dai parenti del padre in patria, decisi a far convolare a nozze Amani con un cugino di primo grado, sconosciuto e, soprattutto, come avrà modo di scoprire a sue spese, violento come tutti gli uomini della famiglia paterna. Amani, scoperto l'inganno, si ribellerà con tutte le sue forze, trascinando la sua vita di adolescente per tredici interminabili e terribili mesi di violenze fisiche e mentali. Amani era la migliore amica di mia figlia Giulia, alle elementari. Dopo un trasferimento di scuola ci siamo perse, e grazie a mia figlia l'ho ritrovata tre anni fa. Quando mi ha raccontato a grandi linee cosa le era accaduto, ho sentito la rabbia salire dalla pancia e le ho detto "Bisogna raccontare, bisogna denunciare, non possono accadere cose così". Lei era dubbiosa, stava cercando di dimenticare. Io le ho proposto un solo incontro e le ho detto "Se ricordare ti fa solo male lasciamo stare, se ti fa male ma anche un po' bene ne riparliamo". E dal primo incontro, durato circa tre ore, Amani si è lasciata andare come un torrente in piena; ha sofferto ancora, ha pianto molto, ma le ha fatto bene.
Come hai fatto ad immedesimarti, a scrivere in prima persona di questa terribile storia di violenza? Prima di mettermi a scrivere mi chiudevo nel mio ufficio completamente al buio, illuminato solo dal video. Leggevo i miei appunti ascoltando dei pezzi di musica siriana che Amani mi aveva mandato, guardavo dei micro filmati che aveva girato in Siria con il telefonino, ascoltavo la sua voce, che avevo registrato nei nostri incontri. Non è stato sempre facile condividere un dolore così grande con quella che ai miei occhi era ancora la bambina di otto anni che giocava con le mie figlie il sabato pomeriggio, ma forse è stato proprio quel dolore, anche mio, a far uscire le parole giuste. L'anno scorso in Non lo faccio più (Unicopli) hai raccontato storie di donne violentate in Italia. Oriente e Occidente, due mondi così diversi eppure così uguali? Sì, e il mio impegno è quello di far uscire la violenza dal silenzio. Anche Veronica, la ragazza che in Non lo faccio più racconta dello stupro subito, mi ha detto di recente che sapere che porto nelle scuole la sua esperienza e i suoi rimpianti le sta facendo fare la pace col mondo. È proprio questo il nodo da sciogliere. Se non si denuncia, la violenza continua a fare male, bisogna essere consapevoli di avere il diritto di pronunciarla, per poi ricostruirsi. Non c'è colpa in chi subisce, eppure per molte questo non è chiaro. La storia di Amani ci appare lontana, ma i dati della violenza sulle donne in Italia ci dicono che non è così. I was shocked, however, by the anti-Israel bigotry and hostility I encountered, especially in the greater Seattle area, Oregon, and Berkeley. I had been very liberal, a member of the leftist Zionist party, Meretz, but the anti-Semitism and hatred for Israel that I have seen in the U.S. has changed my outlook personally and politically.
As part of my work as an educator at StandWithUs, between January and May of this year, I traveled to college campuses, high schools and churches, sharing the history of modern Israel. I also shared personal stories about growing up in the Jewish state, and about my family. I always spoke about my military service as an officer in an IDF COGAT unit that attends to the needs of Palestinian civilians who are not involved in the conflict and promotes Palestinian civil society. Each time I would speak and take questions for an hour or more. I have shared my personal story with over 16,000 people at many, many college campuses and high schools, including UC Berkeley, Stanford, the University of Washington, Seattle University and many others. Many of those to whom I spoke were supportive, friendly, and open to hearing about my Israel. But, sadly, far too many were not.
When I served as a soldier in the West Bank, I got used to having ugly things said to me, but nothing prepared me for the misinformation, demonization of Israel, and the gut-wrenching, anti-Israel, anti-Semitic hostility expressed by many students, professors, church members, and even some high school students right here in the Pacific Northwest.
I was further shocked by how unaware the organized Jewish community is and how little they are actually doing to counter this rising anti-Semitism, which motivated me to write this article.
This new form of bigotry against Israel has been called the "new anti-Semitism," with "Israel" replacing "Jew" in traditional anti-Semitic imagery and canards, singling out and discriminating against the Jewish state, and denying the Jewish people alone the right to self-determination. The new anti-Semitism is packaged in the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign (BDS), which claims to champion Palestinian rights though its real goal is to erode American support for Israel, discredit Jews who support Israel, and pave the way for eliminating the Jewish state. One of BDS' central demands is the "complete right of return" for all the descendants of the original Palestinian refugees, subtle language that means the end of Israel as the Jewish homeland because it would turn Israel into a Palestinian-Arab majority state.
It is surprising that an extremist group like BDS is ever taken seriously, but BDS advocates have found receptive audiences in some circles. Their campaigns are well organized and in many cases, well financed. They have lobbied universities, corporations, food co-ops, churches, performing artists, labor unions, and other organizations to boycott Israel and companies that do business with Israel. But even if these groups don't agree to treat Israel as a pariah state, the BDS activists manage to spread their anti-Israel misinformation, lies and prejudice simply by forcing a debate based on their false claims about Israel.
To give you a taste of the viciousness of the BDS attacks, let me cite just a few of the many shocking experiences I have had. At a BDS event in Portland, a professor from a Seattle university told the assembled crowd that the Jews of Israel have no national rights and should be forced out of the country. When I asked, "Where do you want them to go?" she calmly answered, "I don't care. I don't care if they don't have any place else to go. They should not be there." When I responded that she was calling for ethnic cleansing, both she and her supporters denied it. And during a presentation in Seattle, I spoke about my longing for peace between Israel and the Palestinians. When I was done, a woman in her 60's stood up and yelled at me, "You are worse than the Nazis. You are just like the Nazi youth!" A number of times I was repeatedly accused of being a killer, though I have never hurt anyone in my life. On other occasions, anti-Israel activists called me a rapist. The claims go beyond being absurd – in one case, a professor asked me if I knew how many Palestinians have been raped by IDF forces. I answered that as far as I knew, none. She triumphantly responded that I was right, because, she said, "You IDF soldiers don't rape Palestinians because Israelis are so racist and disgusted by them that you won't touch them."
Such irrational accusations are symptomatic of dangerous anti-Semitism. Yet, alarmingly, most mainstream American Jews are completely oblivious to this ugly movement and the threat it poses. They seem to be asleep, unaware that this anti-Jewish bigotry is peddled on campuses, by speakers in high schools, churches, and communities, and is often deceptively camouflaged in the rhetoric of human rights.
The American Jewish community and its leaders are not providing a united front to combat this latest threat. Unfortunately, this repeats a pattern of Jewish communal groups failing to unite in a timely way to counter threats against us individually and as a community.
Shockingly, a small but very vocal number of Jews actively support BDS. They often belong to organizations that prominently include "Jewish" in their names, like Jewish Voice for Peace, to give cover to BDS and the anti-Semitism that animates it. A question that we, as a Jewish community must ask ourselves, is whether it is ever appropriate to include and accept Jews who support BDS and directly or indirectly advocate the ultimate elimination of the Jewish State of Israel.
I think it is not.
My experiences in America have changed me. I never expected to encounter such hatred and lies. I never believed that such anti-Semitism still existed, especially in the U.S. I never knew that the battlefield was not just Gaza, the West Bank, and hostile Middle Eastern countries wanting to destroy Israel and kill our citizens and soldiers. It is also here in America, where a battle must be waged against prejudice and lies.
I implore American Jews: do more.
Israel cannot fight this big battle alone. If you are affiliated with a Jewish organization, let it know you want it to actively, openly and unequivocally oppose the BDS campaign and those who support it. Inform yourself, your friends and families, by visiting websites of organizations like StandWithUs, Jewish Virtual Library, AIPAC, AJC and others that will update you and provide information about BDS and anti-Semitism.
I urge the organized Jewish community and its members to wake up and stand up for the Jewish state of Israel, and for all it represents, and for all it works to achieve.
